As fashion editors feast their eyes on the London catwalks,听Woman's Hour听looks back at the life of a tour de force of the fashion magazine world. Carmel Snow was editor in chief of Harpers Bazaar in New York from 1934 to 1958, and championed the concept of "the well dressed woman with a well dressed mind". She broadened the scope of fashion journalism to encompass art, fiction and photography. Her contemporaries called her the greatest fashion editor ever, to her colleague Henri Cartier Bresson she was nothing less than a genius.
So why has she been forgotten? Penelope Rowlands, who's written a biography of Carmel Snow, revives her legacy.
