Sikh women 23 December 2004
Are their voices heard sufficiently within society?

A sold-out play written by a Sikh woman made headlines this week, as angry protestors stormed the theatre in Birmingham where it was being staged and forced the production to close.

Behzti was written by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti and depicts sexual abuse and murder in a temple. Much has been made in the media of the threat this incident may pose to freedom of speech.

Meanwhile members of the Sikh community have been expressing their concerns about how their religion is represented in our culture.

Woman's Hour explores how Sikh women feel about the play's subject matter and ask whether their voices are heard sufficiently within our society.

Religion - Sikhism
