, a picture by the American photographer Dorothea Lange has become one the world's most famous images. At the height of the Great Depression Lange photographed the woman and her two small children. It came to epitomise the poverty, suffering and dignity of those displaced during the 1930's.
The photo has been issued as a stamp in the U.S and a copy was sold for a quarter of a million pounds. It's now the centrepiece of an exhibition at the Lowry in Salford looking at the photographers of the Great Depression - three of them women.听
Mark Durden, curator of 'This is America'听 and Professor of History, Jay Kleinberg join Jenni to discuss whether the pictures are听radical, or conservative representations of femininity.
The exhibitionThis is America: Documentary Photographs from the 1930s and 1940s is at the Lowry in Salford from 2 October听to 2 January露
