The Fair Equestrienne 21 September 2004
a new exhibition of women's riding-wear

Today most horsewomen make do with a comfy pair of jodhpurs and an old jumper but, as new exhibition of women's riding-wear from the 18th-20th century shows, previous generations of horsewomen were more concerned with looking stylish in the saddle.

Tight corsets, long skirts and later breeches were all part of the requirements.

Fiona Clampin met curator Shelley Tobin and side-saddle collector Penny Housden at Killerton House in Devon and asked Delyth Jones, a keen modern-day horsewoman, about her ideal riding-wear, and persuaded her to try on some of the 19th century pieces.
