Why are women听a minority in the hobby of birdwatching?

Birdwatching is commonly perceived now as a male pastime. But it was a group of Didsbury ladies who popularised听bird protection听in the 19th century.听

How听far are female bird watchers accepted by male counterparts today?
And do the sexes differ in their methods and what they are looking for?

We hear from twitchers attending the British Birdwatching Fair and Jennitalks to Stephen Moss the author of A Bird in the Bush, a social history of birdwatching听and Sue Hepton, a grandmother and听an avid birdwatcher.

A Bird in the Bush, a social history of birdwatching by Stephen Moss, Publisher: Aurum Press ISBN: 1854109936
