Can the move to secondary school be made easier?

Every summer the nation's 11-yr-olds and their parents prepare for a rite of passage - the move from primary to secondary school. For some, it's a challenge they're looking forward to; for others it's a terrifying prospect. Certainly there's often an academic tailing off during the first year of secondary school. So how can the transition to 'big school' be made easier?
