The painter Winifred Nicholson spent many working holidays in Scotland where the quality of light and ever changing weather inspired her work. One of her most famous paintings is The Gate to the Isles.
Helen Ross visited a new exhibition of her work which focusses for the first time on Winifred's life and work in Scotland, and includes many painting which have rarely been seen in public.
She talks to Winifred's granddaughter, Rafaele Appleby, the curator Alice Strang and art historian, Judith Collins.
The exhibition of Winifred Nicholson's paintings is at the Duff House Gallery, Banff, Grampian from 8 November to 18 January 2004
