Artist Jill Randall Thursday 23 October 2003
Artist Jill Randall has spent the last year burying plates of metal the length and breadth of the River Irwell, which cuts a course through Salford.

Once dotted with heavy industry and teaming with barges delivering their loads, the cranes now stand silent. The Irwell has become home to some of Britain's most splendid new buildings - the Lowry Theatre and the Imperial War Museum North, designed by the man tasked with replacing New York's Twin Towers.
Jill's new exhibition draws its inspiration from the river and from the great factories which lie along it. She took Judy Merry on a tour.
