Virginia Woolf Wednesday 10 September 2003
Image: Spirits of Place, courtersy of Penguin Publishers
The names of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell are now inextricably linked with the Bloomsbury Squares of London where they and their friends met to discuss art, politics and to write.

But before they married, the Stephen sisters were raised in Kensington, with their younger brothers, step-siblings and their parents, Leslie and Julia all together in one large crowded house.
In the first of a new series on writers and their landscapes, Jane Brown - the author of Spirits of Place, told Jennifer Chevalier how escaping to the Cornish coast when she was a girl affected Virginia Stephen for the rest of her life.
Jane Brown is the author of 'Spirits of Place: Five Famous Lives in Their Landscape', Published 30 May 2002 Penguin Books; ISBN: 0140295372
