When Alison and Craig Richards' first baby Owen was born last September, it was the happiest moment of their lives. But although his heart was beating healthily a minute before he was born, he died seconds later.
The cause of death was Group B streptococcus, a normally harmless bacterium that lives in the intestines of a third of all adults, but than can prove fatal in newborn babies.
But why is awareness of this rare condition so low, and what can be done to save the lives of the hundred babies every year who are killed by it?
Rhona Hughes, a consultant obstetrician at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Jane Plumb, founder of Group B Strep Support (GBSS) join Jenni to discuss. For more information call the 成人快手 Actionline on 0800 044 044.
