Art Deco Friday 28 March 2003
Banana Skirt, Josephine Baker from ?Le Tumulte Noir? by Paul Colin (1892-1985) Published by 脡ditions d?Art Succ猫s Plate, early 20th century 漏 DACS, London
Art Deco was the style that swept the world in the twenties and thirties, from buildings to ocean liners, automobiles to biscuit tins. It's set for resurgence in popularity with a new Art Deco exhibition which has just opened at the V&A.

The movement subsequently took its name from an exhibition of Decorative Art in Paris in 1925 that was centred on consumption and luxury.
One of the main elements of the exhibition was women's fashion. The flapper with her short skirts and bobbed hair was the image of the modern woman, as Corinne Julius discovered when she met Ghislaine Wood, the V&A's exhibition curator.
The Art Deco exhibition is on at the V&A from 27 March until 20 July 2003, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 2RL. Advance ticket sales: 0870 906 3883 or book online.
The Barbican is doing Art Deco in film from 19 April until 5 May 2003. Barbican Box Office: 0207 638 8891.
