Parrots Saturday 28 September 2002
The parrot has often had a strong role in British public life.

Most of us remember the parrot in Treasure Island or have even heard of Flaubert's Parrot. But for Dr Paula James and Dr Julia Courtney from the Open University literary parrots are so intriguing that they've begun to research them.
The two academics call this exotic bird the 'all pervasive polly', they crop up everywhere. But why parrots in the first place?
Paula James and Julia Courtney join Martha to discuss.
Send us your examples of parrots in literature
