Cheddar cheese is indeed named after the gorge in the Mendip Hills where it was first made.

It only got its name in the 16th century, even though it was first produced by the Romans who introduced hard cheeses to Britain.
You can now buy it anywhere in the world because it's widely copied, the food writer Juliet Harbutt, who hails from the New World, lived under a misapprehension for years.
