The traditional paperback romance formula, where innocent young women meet older men, fall in love and live happily every after in lawfully wedded bliss is under threat, Woman's Hour wants to challenge the bodice-ripping classic lines that historically make up romantic novels.
Between October 1926 and January 1928 DH Lawrence wrote and rewrote perhaps the most famous romantic novel of the century "Lady Chatterly's Lover." His use of taboo language far exceed anything acceptable in contemporary fiction at the time. Gerald Mills and Charles Boon established Mills and Boon in 1908. The romantic published survived 2 world wars, and the same strict guidelines for writing a novel are still upheld today Quotes for Inspiration Lady Chatterly: "Constance sat down with her back to a young pine-tree, that wayed against her with curious life, elastic, and powerful, rising up. The erect, alive thing, with its top in the sun!" "Romance is tempestuous. Love is calm."- Gertrude Stein "Romance should never begin with sentiment. It should begin with science and end with a settlement." Oscar Wilde
