Dyscalculia Thursday 18 April 2002
Twenty years ago not many people had heard of Dyslexia, but today's increased awareness of it has brought other conditions to light. The latest is Dyscalculia. It's like Dyslexia only it affects our ability to process numbers rather than language.

Little is known about its prevalence, causes or treatment. But from September this year schools will have access to a testing kit which they can use to screen children for Dyscalculia. It's been developed by Professor Brian Butterworth of University College London.
Jan Poustie has suffered from Dyscalculia all her life, but was only diagnosed five years ago. They both join Jenni to discuss whether it's time the problem was given more attention or whether it's just another way for middle class parents to get more resources for their underachieving children.
If you would like a factsheet on Dyscalculia, please send a SAE and 拢1 to Jan Poustie, 68 Hamilton Road, Taunton, Somerset TA1 2ES marking the envelope MATHS
