It was 200 years that a group of high minded and philanthropic women got together to launch a new society.
The Friendly Female Society provided accommodation and security "for the winter of life" to "women of good character". Two rows of terraced houses were built - the first in Camberwell, and another in Brixton South London.
Though the Camberwell houses have been demolished, those in Brixton still survive and flourish, as does the society itself. And though the name has changed from the Friendly Female Society to The Friendly Alms House, 200 years on, its aims remain virtually unchanged.
Dilly Barlow visits the Friendly Alms House by Mary Stott, who's been a committee member for eight years.
