The 1920s to the 1960s saw a voracious female reading public, devouring the novels of Elizabeth Bowen, Winifred Holtby, Nancy Mitford, Stella Gibbons and the like. Their books were often referred to as "middlebrow" with a readership that was predominantly middle class.
