German Christmas market Wednesday 12 December 2001
You may have noticed that in an effort to get us to squeeze in an extra little holiday before the end of the year, the package tour operators have been advertising trips to Germany to shop in the country's traditional Christmas markets.

The adverts describe Christmas card scenes of atmospheric old towns with cobbled market squares surrounded by half timbered houses.
But don't worry if you can't spare the money or the time to go all the way to Germany. The traditional Christmas markets are coming to Britain.
Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham have all been all begun playing host to German stall holders in the last couple of years.
Barnsley however is one of the more well established German Christmas markets and it attracts coach loads of visitors from all over the North of England.
Margot Dunne went to find out just why it's so popular.
