Self portraits Tuesday 11 December 2001
Most of us are fascinated by self portraits. They afford the opportunity of getting up close to another human being, seeing what they think of themselves, without the need to interact.

Mirror Mirror, an exhibition currently on at the National Portrait Gallery in London, draws together the self portraits of women artists from the 17th century to the present day.
Corinne Julius met the curator Liz Rideal and the art historian Witney Chadwick to find out why there has been such a long tradition of women self portrait artists.
The exhibition continues until 24 February and then goes on a national tour. For more details call 0207 312 2463.
