The National Gardens Scheme Monday 3 December 2001
The National Gardens Scheme first persuaded the green-fingered to open their private gardens to the public in 1927.

The scheme is now an institution - with thousands of gardens raising over a million pounds for charity every year.
Every possible size and shape of garden goes on display from the stately to the suburban, the cottage to the town patio.
Corinne Julius visited Susan Coleman as she opened her garden to visitors in Braintree, Essex.
