Chess Thursday 6 September 2001
Chess is a game with something of an image problem. It's often portrayed as a pursuit for boffiny men with abnormally high brain-power. But the Hale family is trying to change all that. Nine year old Katie started learning at the age of four.

Already she has won the British Women's Chess Association under nine and joint under 10 championships. This week she started at Millfield Independent School, where she's won the new Nigel Short Chess scholarship.
Katie comes from a family of chess players. She and her three other siblings eleven year old Michael, nine year old Peter and six year old Stephanie have been taught by their mum Sue, a teacher.
Philippa Budgen went for a chess lesson with the Hale family.
