Beekeeping and honey hunting Thursday 2 August 2001
Eva Crane began her scientific career as the sole woman studying physics at Kings College London during the war.

At the same time, she began a lifelong study of bees - she'd been given some as a wedding present, and used the honey to supplement her meagre sugar supplies.
Dr Crane went on to receive a masters in quantum mechanics and a PhD in nuclear physics. She also become one of the world's leading authorities on bees.
She's the author of an exhaustive history of beekeeping and honey hunting. And of a study of rock art, the cave paintings of ancient honey hunters.
Jennifer Chevalier went to meet her - and to check on her neighbours' bees.
Dr Eva Crane is the author of The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting and of The Rock Art of Honey Hunters (both published by Duckworth). Books can be ordered by emailing The International Bee Research Association
