Maria Dickin: founder of the PDSA 24 Dec 2007
Maria Dickin, founder of the PDSA
How 听the role of women in veterinary medicine has changed.

Ninety years ago Maria Dickin was so moved by the suffering of untreated sick animals that she saw in the East End of London she swore to do something about it. Out of her determination the 'People's Dispensary for Sick Animals of the Poor' was born in a tiny cellar in Whitechapel. It proved to be so popular that police were needed to control the crowds of people flocking for free treatment. At a time when the women were not allowed entry into the Royal Veterinary College Maria recruited and trained her own staff and established the modern day PDSA. Today women joining the veterinary profession are outnumbering men - so what implications will this have for the future of the profession?
