The presence of a blacksmith in rural communities was once both vital and commonplace, but as with many rural crafts, the need for the skills of the blacksmith deminished and their numbers dwindled. Now, though, the number of blacksmiths is increasing again and a small number of them are women. They are challenging the traditional view of the blacksmith as the 'village strongman', as reporter Isobel Eaton found when she visited the forge in Marlborough in Wiltshire, to meet Melissa Cole.
