Children and chores 24th November 2009
Iron and ironing board
Is it beneficial for children to be given responsiblities in the home?

In the past children and adolescents were expected to help with all sorts of necessary household tasks听- planning, shopping and preparing meals, helping with sick members of the family, taking responsibility for younger siblings. Today you鈥檙e lucky if you can get your child or teenager to tidy their room, or put the dirty plates in the dishwasher. So when and why did things change? Are chores for children a good idea? What age should they start doing them? And what will happen if you fail to train them properly? Jane talks to parenting expert Annette Mountford from Family Links and writer and mother of four, Lucy Cavendish.
