Women’s Pensions 15 Jan 2008
The governmentÌýÌýwill no longer honour pension pledgeÌýto women

After a U-turn by the Government a few weeks ago, hundreds of thousands of women who took time out of work to care for their children or elderly relatives have lost their chance of receiving a full state pension. The Government had offered to back an amendment, by Baroness Hollis, to the Pensions Bill, which would have allowed women to buy back up to nine years of National Insurance contributions – thereby increasing their state pension entitlement. Campaigners who had been lobbying the Government for this to happen, were dismayed by the decision. Anna PearsonÌýfrom Help the Aged and a member of the Women’s Pensions Network joins Jenni to talkÌýabout what this decision means for the many women approaching retirement age.
