We may think we've left the era of childrearing manuals behind, but with a proliferation of TV programmes like Supernanny, the House of Tiny Tearaways and Driving Mum and Dad Mad, it seems that we have never felt less confident about our parenting skills. And now the government is introducing parenting classes and family intervention centres in an attempt to stem what they regard as the causes of antisocial behaviour.
So why do we regard children now as being out of control? Why do parents never feel as if they're good enough? And what role do experts and the state have in the upbringing of a child? Jenni discusses the issues with Dr Penelope Leach, a senior research fellow at Birkbeck College,听Libby Brooks, author of The Story of Childhood and听Louise Casey, coordinator of the Government's Respect Unit.
