 The inspiration provided by Knutsford
The town of Knutsford in Cheshire, whereElizabeth Gaskell grew up, provided the inspiration for Cranford, a town in which the women folk are both self reliant and dominant. In 1842, the women of Cranford and Knutsford indulged in “elegant economy” and considered talk of money to be vulgar and ostentatious. So what would Mrs Gaskell make of Knutsford today?Judy Merry visits Knutsford in the company of Joan Leach, secretary of The Elizabeth Gaskell Society, and talks to two of its prominent female citizens, councillor Jennifer Holbrook & restaurant owner Nerys Mooney, about the changes in the town since Mrs Gaskell’s day.
Jenni is joined in the studio by the producer of Cranford, Sue Birtwistle, and the series historical consultant Jenny Uglow who has written a biography of Mrs Gaskell.
Elizabeth Gaskell, A Habit of Stories by Jenny Uglow is published by Faber and Faber, ISBN-10: 0571151825
