Dickens’ classic and Mozart’s Magic Flute adapted
Actress and singer, Pauline Malefane was brought up in a township in South Africa, surrounded by music. Now she is playing leading roles in two productions in London. She is ‘The Queen of the Night’ in a South African version of Mozart’s Magic Flute, in which the music is played on marimbas and the ‘flute’ is played by a trumpet. She is also playing the role of Scrooge in a new production of the Christmas Carol, which takes the action of Dickens’ novel from Victorian London to the townships. Pauline joins Jane to talk about how these two European masterpieces have translated to their new South African setting and how the main roles in ‘A Christmas Carol’ have been transformed by being played as women.
