Angela Connor 4 Dec 2007
Angela Conner working on her statue of Laurence Olivier in her studio in Holland Park
On her vast abstract sculptures and her intimate portraits of prominent figures of the twentieth century

British sculptor Angela Conner has had an extraordinary career creating large-scale mobile sculptures, most of which are vast abstracts intended for public outdoor settings and engineered to respond to natural forces like wind and water in a unique way. Her recent commission ‘Wave’ for the Park West development in Dublin, lays claim to be the tallest mobile sculpture in Europe standing at 129 feet.

In her early years Angela was an assistant to Dame Barbara Hepworth, and her work also encompasses intimate portrait sculptures of a remarkable line-up of the most prominent figures of the twentieth and twenty-first century, who have all sat for her– from Prime Ministers, to artists and royalty. In September her statue of Laurence Olivier was unveiled outside the National Theatre on London’s South Bank. Victoria Shepherd meets her at her home and studio in Holland Park, West London.
