Terror in America
Immediate Aftermath
By Richard Hollingham

The day after - Wednesday 12th September
Facts and figures fail to capture the full horror of the terrorist attack on America. Certainly thousands have died. Amongst them were hundreds of firefighters who rushed to the rescue in the financial heart of New York and the globe. Now, the whole world is still watching and waiting. The United States denied knowledge of overnight air strikes on the capital of Afghanistan. But everyone expects the next chapter to unfold rapidly. President Bush has already promised to make no distinction between the terrorists who committed the attacks and those who harbour them" in rooting out the perpetrators of "evil". Whatever the terrorists hoped to achieve, they have changed the world. The clearest symbol of this will be the view New Yorkers will see when the dawn breaks later today. The twin towers of the World Trade Centre will simply no longer be there.

Thursday 13th August
Rescue workers are continuing the painstaking task of trying to find any survivors of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Several people have been pulled out of the wreckage alive, but the remaining floors of the World Trade Centre have collapsed - reducing the likelihood of finding more survivors. The Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, has said it's now been confirmed that nearly one hundred British people were killed in Tuesday's terrorist attacks. President Bush has seen at first hand some of the devastation caused. He visited the Pentagon building in Washington, which suffered severe damage when a hijacked passenger plane was deliberately crashed into it. The Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has been in touch with world leaders to try to agree on a co-ordinated response to the attacks.
