South East Asia diary

By Edward Stourton
Since September 11 we've had correspondents and presenters all over the world, sending back reports about how the political landscape has changed.

Edward Stourton has just sent in this diary - his second on the road - from South East Asia.

29th October
Arrival in Indonesia

"It's probably a journalistic urban myth, but Jakarta is said to be home to more people than the whole of Australia".

30th October
Looking for an Islamic fundamentalist

"It's quiet today outside the American Embassy opposite Monas Park - but it still looks like the besieged outpost of some ancient empire; ramparts and barricades hastily thrown up around the perimeter".

31st October
Dr Mahathir Mohamad

"Mahathir Mohamad is one of those figures who's too big to fit into a pigeon-hole; at once democrat and despot, he's ruled Malaysia for over twenty years, dragging its economy into the twenty-first century ".

1st November
An unorthodox studio

"Our studio in Kuala Lumpur is a room on the 23rd floor of a swish new hotel which comes complete with fake jungle waterfall in the lobby. The bathroom serves as the studio control room".
