In 2002 for our traditional end-of-year poll, we asked listeners to vote for the individual they thought most deserving of honorary status as a British citizen and the individual they felt most deserved to have it revoked.

There was an open nomination process in which you put forward the names of foreigners you believed personify everything we want Britain to be, as well as those you feel we could do without (we received 15000 nominations in both categories via email, telephone and text message).

Of those cited in the open nomination process, two people (one-in, one-out) received around 50% of the nominations in their category and so would have been certain to dominate the final vote as well. They were IN: Nelson Mandela, and OUT: Tony Blair. So to make the final vote more interesting we gave you those two as a bonus.

Nelson Mandela in, Tony Blair out.

A final shortlist of 10 nominees (5 in, 5 out) was then voted on by listeners between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve, with 15500 votes received over that period.

Click on the link to the right to read more about the nominees in each category and see the final percentage of the votes they received.

Thanks to everyone who took part in One-In, One-Out.
