Wednesday 31st March 2004 Science Experiments School students will blow up the universe, smash spinning eggs together, and make coke cans implode聽in order to win the Paperclip Physics competition. The Institute of Physics have organised a competition for students to explain some of the most complex ideas in science using simple explanations. The Paperclip Physics Competition challenges 15-17 yr olds to explain a concept of physics using everyday objects. Only 13 teams from the UK and Ireland have made it through to the grand final. The Experiments A team from Macclesfield will use balloons and a xylophone to show the expansion of the universe, while a team from Omagh will explain how planes stay in the air by making cola cans spontaneously collapse. Other teams will be smashing eggs and acting out experiments on the Moon in their bid to win the title. The Judges Colin Dexter, the author of the Inspector Morse novels, will be joined by a teacher and a physicist to judge the grand final which will takes place at the Institute of on Wednesday 31st March. In a maximum of five minutes, each team will make a presentation explaining the principle or application of their choice. The teams will use posters and demonstrations but only items that are found in the home are allowed for the construction of the demonstrations. And The Winners Are...
