
In the annals of the modern Conservative Party there's a photograph that tells a fascinating story. It was taken at the wedding of Kenneth Clarke, whose long-held ambition to lead his party died this week. He's surrounded by friends, in Cambridge. And five of the seven went on to become Tory Cabinet ministers.
