Alchemy or science?

Newton's Papers

Isaac Newton is revered for his scientific听theories.听听Theology and alchemy are not the subjects that spring to mind when you think of听his work.听 But听Newton wrote a lot about them and听two pioneering projects are making these texts available to a wide audience.

Dr Rob Iliffe from Imperial College听is Editorial Director of the Newton Project, which has put online nearly half听of the two and a half million words he devoted to the subject of theology, as well as a large selection of his personal and scientific papers. Professor Bill Newman from Indiana University is an expert in Newton's alchemical writings听and is听publishing those papers听on the internet听as 'The Chymistry of Isaac Newton'.听

Fluorescence

The Hayward Gallery's latest exhibition features the work of Dan Flavin听who听used fluorescent light to create works of art.听 As an adjunct to the displays, the Hayward has commissioned some scientists to create a series of exhibits to highlight fluorescence and its related cousins - bioluminescence and phosphorescence.

Quentin Cooper is joined听by听Professor Anthony Campbell,听a medical biochemist at the University of Wales College of Medicine, who patented a bioluminescent jellyfish gene, and Zoe Laughlin, an artist and听materials scientist听from King's College London who helped to put听together the science听exhibtion at听the Hayward gallery.
