Ancient Food听

What did听people听eat at parties in the iron age?听听It听is rare to find whole preserved items such as loaves of bread or听bulbs of garlic.听 Archaelologists must听sieve ancient rubbish tips for burnt grains and听analyse old bones to work听out what ancient peoples used to eat.

Archaeo-botanist Professor Marijke听van der Veen thinks that the cultural context听of how food is consumed is important.听听Understanding which听luxury foods听the听ancient听Egyptians or Iron听Age Britons听had access听- and how they served them - helps us better understand their societies.

Archaeo-zoologist听Dr Paul听Halstead听is interested in what bone remains听show about how meat was butchered and stored, and how we can use pots, paintings and written sources to help interpret archaeological findings.

Pax Warrior

This week we also look at one of the latest in a line of educational computer games that听claim to be good for you.听 'Pax Warrior' takes听the听backdrop of the 1994 Rwandan genocide to explore complex moral and ethical issues.

The game's designer, Andreas Ua'Siaghail,听tells听Material World听what he thinks children will learn by听taking the part of a UN peacekeeper in Rwanda.听 Quentin is also joined by听Dominic Savage, the听Director General of the British Educational Supplies Association, who explains听how games are gradually finding their place in schools.
