Women in Science

80% of scientists and engineers are men.

In some fields, such as physical sciences, the gender imbalance stems from听undergraduate level,听with more听men than women studying these subjects.

But in biosciences, 60% of degrees are awarded to women. However, only 9% of professors are female.

Glass ceilings, old boy networks and maternity leave are problems that stop many women from progressing in science careers.

This week Quentin Cooper is joined by Dr Katie Perry from the Daphne Jackson Trust, which helps people return to work after career breaks. Joining them is Annette Williams, Director of the DTI funded UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.

What are the government, educators and employers doing to reset the gender balance in science?

听Plastic Guitars

Acoustic guitars are traditionally fashioned out of wood. But a team at Loughborough University have recently constructed an all-polymer plastic guitar.

Quentin Cooper chats to Dr Eddie Norman from the Cool Acoustics project and Fame Lab winner, and guitar acoustics expert, Dr Mark Lewney.

Is听plastic the new fantastic for guitars? Or will wood always be more wonderful?
