Mountain Hares

Lionel and his guide, Derek Yalden, cross hill and dale in the Derbyshire Dark Peaks to track, scout and sneak up on the rare and retreating mountain hare.

But these ice adapted animals are not easy to find. They keep their white winter coat right through until the end of March and they're easily missed on the snow covered uplands.

But if anyone can find them, Derek can, and he and Lionel spot one after another as they run around the hillside - sometimes jumping out from under their feet!

Hares are confused with rabbits, but they are as different as fish and dolphins. Hares don't live in burrows, or in societies - they largely live on their own and scrape a little depression out in the snow to sleep.

Hares have four long legs and compared to rabbits are conspicuously big. Mountain (or Arctic ) hares uniquely grow a snow-white coat in the winter, moulting it for a blue coat (and often called the blue hare) in the summer.

But this is the time of year of the "mad" March hare, for courtship and aggressive fighting between males. It's a time when one of our most prestigious听mammals breaks its cover to get on with the mating game.
