Spring Bumblebees
In the second of three programmes dedicated to the听成人快手 Spring Watch event, Lionel Kelleway is joined by bumblebee expert Mike Edwards and 听Edie Jollie听from the听invertebrate charity, Buglife.
Lionel accompanies them on a walk along a woodland edge in the Rewell Wood in Sussex to search for queen bumblebees that are听looking for suitable nesting sites amongst the grassy tussocks.
Only the queens of last year's colonies听survived the winter, and having mated before going into hibernation, they are now ready to lay eggs and raise the next generation.
Some bumblebees act like cuckoos - parasitising the nests of others, while some flies disguise themselves as bees to protect themselves against predators that will be wary of being stung.
The spring and summer months are when bunblebees are at their busiest collecting nectar and pollen from garden flowers.
Bumblebees, like听honey bees and solitary bees, also play an important role in听flower pollination.
