| | | Tree buds in winter听 | The Stirring Trees
Sticky horse chestnut buds and the furry pussy willow are childhood memories from the school nature table.听They听may be fascinating to us,听but听buds听are vitally important for trees.听Superbly designed, these intricate packages help ensure听that the new growth of leaves survive the winter without suffering from听frost听or insect damage.听
The leaves will have formed in the late autumn and sit beautifully folded within the bud waiting for warming temperatures and longer daylength which听are the signals for them to emerge.听 Some trees,听like hawthorn and beech,听also release chemicals which ensure the leaves emerge in the Spring as these chemicals get gradually broken down by the听low temperatures of winter.听
The intricate folding of the hornbeam's听leaves within听its buds have even been studied by scientists to find out how to听fold and squeeze things into small packages without damaging them.听 | | | RELATED LINKS
