As the final apples fall off the trees, Open Country visits one of the most significant fruit-growing areas of Britain. It’s not the orchards of Kent, Gloucestershire or Herefordshire, but North Wales – for it’s here that some of the world’s rarest species of fruit have been discovered. And Helen meets the man who’s rescued them: Ian Sturrock has been described as the Inspector Morse of the apple world and for the last three decades has been hacking his way through the most overgrown parts of the country in search of lost and forgotten fruit.
