* John Updike is one of America's greatest writers and has come to be known as the fictional historian of 20th century America.
Updike's Rabbit quartet of novels is his claim to the great American novel, while the more populist Witches of Eastwich was also produced into a film and play.
In a special programme to celebrate his 70th birthday, Front Row spoke to John Updike in Boston about his career and early life.
Licks of Love by John Updike is published on 28 March.
