* The great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich is 75 later this month. A product of the soviet system he had an uneasy relationship with his homeland. Front Row brought together the film-maker Tony Palmer and the director of the London Symphony Orchestra Clive Gillinson and asked them how would they now characterise Rostropovich's relationship with Russia?
The London Symphony Orchestra begin their 75th birthday celebration concerts at the Barbican centre tomorrow night. The recordings of Rostrapovich playing the Dvorak concerto and the Shostakovich symphony number eight were taken from new CD releases Rostrapovich Mastercellist on the Deutsche Gramaphon label and the Slava 75 on EMI classics.
