Listen听听Listen (5'28) to 'Weekend in Jail', performed by the Tom Martin Band from the album, Old Stones, (JustusMusic UK, 2001)

The Tower of Song gigs are now held on the first Friday of every month with occasional exhibitions of Sound and Vision's paintings on the following Sundays.

Tower of Song

Have you ever been stirred to sing? Penned your own lyrics in a Bob Dylan / Joni Mitchell style even? Or do you simply revel in the pleasure of hearing soulful acoustic songs in a relaxed setting? Then the Tower of Song's the place for you as I discovered at their latest concert in Birmingham's Rowheath Pavilion.

This monthly tower of musical Babel features some of the Midlands' finest singers from the Celtic soul of the Tom Martin Band to the multi-influenced acoustic roots of Sam Cornwell and John Davies. Driven by Tom's personal and professional passion not only for the craft of song writing but also for his commitment to conserving the Pavilion as a major community focal point, this event's just one of many happenings organised by the West Midlands' Song Writers' Association to inspire and involve local families in the music, poetry and art of the neighbourhood..

Yet you can be guaranteed a great atmosphere in the beautiful setting of Rowheath which was once home to the local Quaker community. At the recent session, we basked in country blues, acoustic rock 'n' roll and wistful celtic soul courtesy of the skilful songs and banter of Tom and the boys.
The evening ended with lots of high energy acoustic tinged numbers including 'Old Stones', 'Weekend in Jail' and 'The Northern Queen'.

Tower of SongWhat's really interesting about these Pavilion parties is that they occasionally combine music with pictures where local fine artists come together to exhibit their work in a sensitive setting awash with wonderful melodies. So if you're keen to show your artistic wares in a sympathetic environment, then check out the Rowheath Pavilion. I did and now my paintings hold pride of place alongside other local artist including Mike Browning and Paul Murphy.

The venture's enthusiastic efforts have been rewarded by way of funding from the PRS Foundation for ongoing concerts. With the Rowheath Pavilion management backing these creative community events, there'll be workshops, concerts and festivals aplenty in the coming months.
