to 'Planet Hemp / HIP HOP DO RIO' by Favela Chic
On June 10th a new club called Chocolate Milk was launched, with the aim of bringing the hottest 'global grooves' to London. The intimate was transformed into a wild Parisian Brazilian party. The music and energy were provided by Favela Chic, a Paris-based collective of DJs, visual artists and a percussionist. Club organiser Shaheera Asante describes their special vibe: 'They take the energy of the Brazilian favelas (shanty towns) and mix it with Parisian chic. Their musical base is Brazilian but they encorporate funk, house, hip hop and even rock. They're like a travelling party.'
is best known to Radio 3 listeners as a regular guest presenter on the laid-back late-night programme Late Junction. Chocolate Milk is Shaheera's first go at turning her musical enthusiasms into a live event. 'I wanted to provide a creative outlet for artists who aren't given a lot of publicity and are mostly unsigned. It's also about the atmosphere. I've been to many events around the city and I've never found a communal party. Clubs can be a bit impersonal - no one greets you when you come in. I wanted to create a personal feel.'
Judging by the first night, the club will appeal to a wide and willing audience. 'It was a Tuesday night, and by 9 o'clock the place was completely packed. It was a mixed crowd, with lots of French people, Brazilians, and residents of the area. I was really happy with the cross-section of cultures and ages, with people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s all together on the dance floor.'
Each month the club will have a different theme, based on a musical genre or a country. From June's Brazilian vibe it moves to an Afro-beat flavour on July 15th, featuring DJs and sounds from the clubs of Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal. Master drummer Baba Kone from Burkino Faso will be on live percussion, and the 'Goddesses of Zambinka' (above) will be dancing. So if you're coming 'don't forget your Afro'!
