Monkey Club - Afro Night
13 Castle Street
Swansea, SA1 1JF

African The Afro Night is a monthly event down Swansea's premier (and only!) alternative night club, Monkey. It has been running for 2 years now and it's put on by an organisation 'The Global Culture Collective' who promote events and gigs in the Swansea area, aimed at providing an outlet for music from around the globe. The night is normally electric with dance music from all over Africa and drumming upstairs and a very eclectic audience. (Mick Coleman)

Welsh, Asian, Jazz, Folk Expect to be wowed by this year’s line up of fantastic bands, featuring emaline delapaix from Australia, with her ‘lilting string laden lullabies, funky folk, jazz roots and lush eclectic pop’. Also, faerie folk with a sprinkling of jazz from All the Usual Suspects, and Some Like it Hot, an eclectic shockwave of jazz & funk harmony and stompin’ rhythms. Plus, teen band Zia, with original arrangements and beautiful vocal harmonies.

Small Nations Festival, Wales

worldfusion / Welsh folk The Small Nations Festival was held for the first time in July this year in Cilycwm, Llandovery. I went on the Friday night when Te Vaka topped the bill and were brilliant. There was also a kora player, an Irish folk duo and Imbizu from Zimbabwe amongst others.

It has the potential to be an enjoyable festival; the main problems they need to overcome are dodgy acoustics (they are making efforts to improve) and a lack of people!

Next year, partly for financial reasons, they will probably be joining up with a Welsh folk festival to create a joint event, so please look in if you're in the area and think this might be your thing. (Anna Roberts)
