A favourite song:

Some of the songs such as 'Little Musgrave' and 'Tamlyn' telll a great story and I've included them in my set now for quite a while. Many of them go back hundreds of years. You realise as you're singing them that they were songs that were told around the fireplace, before there was any other form of entertainment after a hard day's work. I put them in my performance and mix them with my own songs. 'Little Musgrave' is a great story. It's almost like an eleventh century soap opera which comes from Northumberland as far as we know. The story changes from one version to another. In America it's called 'Matty Graves'. It's a story of a young knave who goes to church. He's in love with the lady of the manor, Lady Barnard. They get together one night in her bower. Lord Barnard hears about this from the lady's page. Meanwhile, Musgrave's gone away to the other side of the forest. The Lord chases after them and then there's a duel. Little Musgrave dies ... which is very sad. Then there's a sort of remorse and regret as a result of an argument between Lady Barnard and Lord Barnard at the end. That's the basis of the story but there are so many little subtleties with characters weaving in and out, representing loyalty and jealousy. It's a great tale.
