Where I Play:
I’m not a full-time player anymore. When I hit 30 I decided ‘time to get sensible’ and became a qualified teacher. I teach in 8 local schools working with children from 9 right up to 18 year olds. I also take master classes at the Kirkmichael International Guitar Festival and lead the kids when they play on the first night of the festival.
In terms of the community it’s great - all the parents get involved, everyone comes along to the concerts, and you always get a great cheer! When the kids are playing, everybody knows how much work’s gone into it. It’s good fun and great banter around music in the lead-up. One of the songs we played this year was a special request by one of the dinner ladies.
To be a teacher, 90 percent of the battle is motivating the students, and when you have something like this festival the students are 100 percent motivated. All I have to do is give them guitars and point them in the right direction, and they’re practising and learning - so I’m really lucky as a teacher.
I think it’s important that the kids can experience as many different musical genres as possible. At a festival like this you’ll see every style of music imaginable, and unimaginable, played on guitar. I’ve listened to guitar music for 30 years, and every time I come to this festival there’s something that surprises me afresh. That’s why things like this are great for the kids to go to as well as for the local community.
