Greece, Malaysia, from Thailand, and from China like myself… We try to compose or arrange music respecting our own traditions and but trying to communicate with other traditions as well - that's why I started to go back to my Yang Qin. Like last year we did project where I played on the Yang Qin but with Greek music - that was new for me!

I'm also involved in the Chinese Community School in Edinburgh, because there seems to be a demand that Chinese people here in Scotland want to know more about Chinese instruments. Many people, especially young people, don't know anything about Chinese music, so there has been a demand for us to teach them more about their own culture. So we started to have some Chinese instrumental classes, and also some workshops and projects like that, so we can play music together.

We kept in contact and in the Mela Festival this year we had a fusion project with music from Pakistan, Scotland and China. In the project and Scottish composer Colin Blakey, and Nafees Ahmed, who is a very eminent sitar player from Pakistan, and I arranged music from the cultures of the other 2 composers. So I arranged a set of Scottish music and a set of Pakistani music, and so on, and through that we tried to understand about how we do things… for example in playing the music together, sometimes we knew an idea already but we expressed it in a different musical language - that's what I mean about the intercultural idea being fun, because through that we can actually understand how the same thing is expressed in other cultures, then we can communicate. I think this project was done in a very successful way and I hope that we can do more of this kind of thing so that we can actually communicate more. It might be in the Chinese community next time!
